Mapping of a minimal apolipoprotein(a) interaction motif conserved in fibrin(ogen) beta - and gamma -chains

Klose,R.; Fresser,F.; Köchl,S.; Parson,W.; Kapetanopoulos,A.; Fruchart-Najib,J.; Baier,G.; Utermann,G.; Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) is a major independent risk factor for atherothrombotic disease in humans. The physiological function(s) of Lp(a) as well as the precise mechanism(s) by which high plasma levels of Lp(a) increase risk are unknown. Binding of apolipoprotein(a) (apo(a)) to fibrin(ogen) and other components of the blood clotting cascade has been demonstrated in vitro, but the domains in fibrin(ogen) critical for interaction are undefined. Metallothioneins in terrestrial invertebrates: structural aspects, biological significance and implications for their use as biomarkers [In Process Citation]

Dallinger,R.; Berger,B.; Gruber,C.; Hunziker,P.; Sturzenbaum,S.; During the last few years the subject of metallothioneins (MTs) in terrestrial invertebrates has gained increasing attention. One reason for this may be that terrestrial invertebrates provide new insights into the biological diversity of MTs, with the potential of discovering alternative models of structural and functional relationships. Four groups of terrestrial invertebrates have been studied in detail, namely nematodes, insects, snails and earthworms, with the present article focusing on MTs from the latter two groups. Mitochondrial DNA in the central european population. Human identification with the help of the forensic mt-DNA D-loop-base database

Wittig,H.; Augustin,C.; Baasner,A.; Bulnheim,U.; mo-Simonin,N.; Edelmann,J.; Hering,S.; Jung,S.; Lutz,S.; Michael,M.; Parson,W.; Poetsch,M.; Schneider,P.M.; Weichhold,G.; Krause,D.; Sequencing of mtDNA is an advanced method for the individualisation of traces. Disadvantages of this method are expensive and time-consuming analysis and evaluation procedures as well as the necessary stock of population-genetic data which is still insufficient. Central European institutes of forensic medicine from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland have been working together since the beginning of 1998 to establish a mtDNA database. [Read More]

Multiple organ failure following inhalation of butane gas: a case report

Rieder-Scharinger,J.; Peer,R.; Rabl,W.; Hasibeder,W.; Schobersberger,W.; Most cases of acute poisoning by butane and other volatile compounds occur in young people as a consequence of substance abuse by inhalation. Clinical symptoms are caused by asphyxia and mainly affect the cardiovascular, respiratory and central nervous system. There are also reported deaths from intoxication of butane inhalation, mostly by cardiac arrhythmia. We report the case of a healthy 14 year-old boy who inhaled butane gas from an aerosol can for refilling cigarette lighters. [Read More]
