Reproducibility of mtDNA analysis between laboratories: a report of the European DNA Profiling Group (EDNAP)

Carracedo,A.; D’Aloja,E.; Dupuy,B.; Jangblad,A.; Karjalainen,M.; Lambert,C.; Parson,W.; Pfeiffer,H.; Pfitzinger,H.; Sabatier,M.; Syndercombe,Court; Vide,C.; The aim of this collaborative exercise was to determine whether uniformity of mtDNA sequencing results could be achieved among different EDNAP laboratories. Laboratories were asked to sequence mtDNAHV1 region (16024-16365) from three bloodstains, proceeding in accordance with the protocol and strategies currently used in each individual laboratory. Cycle sequencing was used by 11 laboratories and solid phase single stranded sequencing was used by one laboratory. [Read More]

The interosseous membrane and its influence on the distal radioulnar joint. An anatomical investigation of the distal tract

Gabl,M.; Zimmermann,R.; Angermann,P.; Sekora,P.; Maurer,H.; Steinlechner,M.; Pechlaner,S.; From the interosseous membrane of the forearm a tract extends to the dorsal capsule of the distal radioulnar joint. The structure and function of this tract have been investigated. The tract originates from the radius 22 mm proximal to the distal dorsal corner of the sigmoid notch. Central fibres are attached there with fibrous cartilage and superficial bundles mix with the periosteum. The tract is 8 mm wide, 31 mm long and 1 mm thick. [Read More]

17Beta-estradiol antagonizes effects of 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 on interleukin-6 production and osteoclast-like cell formation in mouse bone marrow primary cultures

Schiller,C.; Gruber,R.; Redlich,K.; Ho,G.M.; Katzgraber,F.; Willheim,M.; Pietschmann,P.; Peterlik,M.; In mouse bone marrow primary cultures, the formation of osteoclast-like, i.e. tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP)- and calcitonin receptor-positive multinucleated cells (MNC), when induced by 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1alpha,25(OH)2D3), can be suppressed by 17beta-estradiol (17beta-E2), whereas 17alpha-E2 is without any effect. 17beta-E2, above 10(-11) M, significantly reduced 1alpha,25(OH)2D3-mediated TRAP+ MNC formation in cultured bone marrow cells from both female and male mice. The estrogen at 10(-8) M suppressed the peak response to the vitamin D sterol by 50%. [Read More]

Active compression-decompression resuscitation: the influence of different chest geometries on the force transmission

Haid,C.; Rabl,W.; Baubin,M.; Active compression-decompression cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ACD-CPR) is performed using a plunger-like suction device applied onto the chest. Forces are partly transferred through the center of this device as well as through the peripheral ring of the plunger’s lip seal. We analysed the load transmission distribution of the Ambu CardioPump; therefore a homemade mechanical model was used for simulating different chest geometries. We applied compression forces up to 750N on the device using a ‘material testing machine’, and we determined the load transferred through the central part of the device and the peripheral ring respectively.
