Austrian Caucasian population data for the quadruplex plus amelogenin: refined mutation rate for HumvWFA31/A

Ambach,E.; Parson,W.; Niederstätter,H.; Budowle,B.; Human identification of biological specimens has undergone immense change since the development of PCR typing systems for forensic casework. In contrast to RFLP and VNTRs, STRs are the method of choice when the investigated genomic DNA is present in low quantity or in degraded shape. In the current study, the X-Y homologous gene Amelogenin has been added to a widely used multiplex PCR amplification system consisting of four tetrameric STR loci (Quadruplex-HumTH01, HumvWFA31/A, HumFES/FPS, and HumF13A1). Camphor ingestion for abortion (case report)

Rabl,W.; Katzgraber,F.; Steinlechner,M.; The case of a 16-year-old girl who ingested 30 g of camphor dissolved with 250 ml wine to induce abortion is reported. The girl started vomiting 45 min after ingestion, which may have saved her life. Camphor is present in a number of over-the-counter medications, mainly for external application, and is readily available in drugstores. The substance is highly toxic and rapid in onset. The reported human lethal dose is 50 to 500 mg kg-1. [Read More]

Chromosome Y microsatellites: population genetic and evolutionary aspects

De Knijff,P.; Kayser,M.; Caglia,A.; Corach,D.; Fretwell,N.; Gehrig,C.; Graziosi,G.; Heidorn,F.; Herrmann,S.; Herzog,B.; Hidding,M.; Honda,K.; Jobling,M.; Krawczak,M.; Leim,K.; Meuser,S.; Meyer,E.; Oesterreich,W.; Pandya,A.; Parson,W.; Penacino,G.; Perez-Lezaun,A.; Piccinini,A.; Prinz,M.; Roewer,L.; .; By means of a multicenter study, a large number of males have been characterized for Y-chromosome specific short tandem repeats (STRs) or microsatellites. A complete summary of the allele frequency distributions for these Y-STRs is presented in the Appendix. This manuscript describes in more detail some of the population genetic and evolutionary aspects for a restricted set of seven chromosome Y STRs in a selected number of population samples. Evaluation of Y-chromosomal STRs: a multicenter study

Kayser,M.; Caglia,A.; Corach,D.; Fretwell,N.; Gehrig,C.; Graziosi,G.; Heidorn,F.; Herrmann,S.; Herzog,B.; Hidding,M.; Honda,K.; Jobling,M.; Krawczak,M.; Leim,K.; Meuser,S.; Meyer,E.; Oesterreich,W.; Pandya,A.; Parson,W.; Penacino,G.; Perez-Lezaun,A.; Piccinini,A.; Prinz,M.; Schmitt,C.; Roewer,L.; A multicenter study has been carried out to characterize 13 polymorphic short tandem repeat (STR) systems located on the male specific part of the human Y chromosome (DYS19, DYS288, DYS385, DYS388, DYS389I/II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392, DYS393, YCAI, YCAII, YCAIII, DXYS156Y). Amplification parameters and electrophoresis protocols including multiplex approaches were compiled. [Read More]
