The GHEP-EMPOP collaboration on mtDNA population data--A new resource for forensic casework

Prieto,L.; Zimmermann,B.; Goios,A.; Rodriguez-Monge,A.; Paneto,G.G.; Alves,C.; Alonso,A.; Fridman,C.; Cardoso,S.; Lima,G.; Anjos,M.J.; Whittle,M.R.; Montesino,M.; Cicarelli,R.M.; Rocha,A.M.; Albarran,C.; de Pancorbo,M.M.; Pinheiro,M.F.; Carvalho,M.; Sumita,D.R.; Parson,W.; Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) population data for forensic purposes are still scarce for some populations, which may limit the evaluation of forensic evidence especially when the rarity of a haplotype needs to be determined in a database search. In order to improve the collection of mtDNA lineages from the Iberian and South American subcontinents, we here report the results of a collaborative study involving nine laboratories from the Spanish and Portuguese Speaking Working Group of the International Society for Forensic Genetics (GHEP-ISFG) and EMPOP. 3D versus 2D cell culture implications for electron microscopy

Hess,M.W.; Pfaller,K.; Ebner,H.L.; Beer,B.; Hekl,D.; Seppi,T.; Cell culture systems are indispensable tools for basic research and a wide range of clinical in vitro studies. However, conventional 2D cell cultures poorly mimic the conditions in the living organism. This limitation may seriously compromise the reliability and significance of data obtained from such approaches. Therefore, we present here a comparative study on selected 3D and 2D cell cultures of U87-MG human glioblastoma cells that were processed by means of high-pressure freezing and freeze-substitution as well as by conventional chemical fixation and Tokuyasu cryo-section immuno-labeling. A fatal intoxication case involving topiramate

Beer,B.; Libiseller,K.; Oberacher,H.; Pavlic,M.; Topiramate belongs to a new group of anticonvulsive drugs primarily applied in treatment of epilepsy and in preventive therapy of migraines. Topiramate is structurally unrelated to other antiepileptic drugs and acts by multiple neurostabilizing mechanisms. However, the pharmacology of topiramate appears to be complex and some of its pharmacodynamic actions still remain to be elucidated. This case report documents a fatal intoxication involving topiramate. A 41-year old woman with a known history of psychiatric disorder was found unresponsive by her husband. [Read More]

Amerindian mitochondrial DNA haplogroups predominate in the population of Argentina: towards a first nationwide forensic mitochondrial DNA sequence database

Bobillo,C.; Zimmermann,B.; Sala,A.; Huber,G.; Röck,A.; Bandelt,H.J.; Corach,D.; Parson,W.; The study presents South American mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) data from selected north (N?=?98), central (N?=?193) and south (N?=?47) Argentinean populations. Sequence analysis of the complete mtDNA control region (CR, 16024-576) resulted in 288 unique haplotypes ignoring C-insertions around positions 16193, 309, and 573; the additional analysis of coding region single nucleotide polymorphisms enabled a fine classification of the described lineages. The Amerindian haplogroups were most frequent in the north and south representing more than 60% of the sequences. [Read More]
