Publication of population data of linearly inherited DNA markers in the International Journal of Legal Medicine

Parson,W.; Roewer,L.; This manuscript extends on earlier recommendations of the editor of the International Journal of Legal Medicine on short tandem repeat population data and provides details on specific criteria relevant for the analysis and publication of population studies on haploid DNA markers, i.e. Y-chromosomal polymorphisms and mitochondrial DNA. The proposed concept is based on review experience with the two forensic haploid markers databases YHRD and EMPOP, which are both endorsed by the International Society for Forensic Genetics. Successful management of postpneumonectomy Aspergillus pleural empyema by combined surgical and anti-fungal treatment with voriconazole and caspofungin

Bonatti,H.; Lass-Floerl,C.; Angerer,K.; Singh,N.; Lechner,M.; Stelzmueller,I.; Singh,R.; Schmid,T.; Geltner,C.; Aspergillus pleural empyema is a rare but often fatal infection complicating thoracic surgery. Three men and one woman aged 23-47 years were diagnosed with Aspergillus pleural empyema after lung resection. Underlying diseases were lung cancer (n = 2), Hodgkin’s disease (n = 1) and thoracic trauma (n = 1). The treatment protocol consisted of systemic anti-fungal treatment with caspofungin and voriconazole, intrapleural application of amphotericin B and surgical debridement with secondary closure of the leaking bronchial stump. The initial peopling of the Americas: A growing number of founding mitochondrial genomes from Beringia

Perego,U.A.; Angerhofer,N.; Pala,M.; Olivieri,A.; Lancioni,H.; Kashani,B.H.; Carossa,V.; Ekins,J.E.; Gomez-Carballa,A.; Huber,G.; Zimmermann,B.; Corach,D.; Babudri,N.; Panara,F.; Myres,N.M.; Parson,W.; Semino,O.; Salas,A.; Woodward,S.R.; Achilli,A.; Torroni,A.; Pan-American mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroup C1 has been recently subdivided into three branches, two of which (C1b and C1c) are characterized by ages and geographical distributions that are indicative of an early arrival from Beringia with Paleo-Indians. In contrast, the estimated ages of C1d-the third subset of C1-looked too young to fit the above scenario. [Read More]

The mtDNA composition of Uzbekistan: a microcosm of Central Asian patterns

Irwin,J.A.; Ikramov,A.; Saunier,J.; Bodner,M.; Amory,S.; Röck,A.; O’Callaghan,J.; Nuritdinov,A.; Atakhodjaev,S.; Mukhamedov,R.; Parson,W.; Parsons,T.J.; In order to better characterize and understand the mtDNA population genetics of Central Asia, the mtDNA control regions of over 1,500 individuals from Uzbekistan have been sequenced. Although all samples were obtained from individuals residing in Uzbekistan, individuals with direct ancestry from neighboring Central Asian countries are included. Individuals of Uzbek ancestry represent five distinct geographic regions of Uzbekistan: Fergana, Karakalpakstan, Khorezm, Qashkadarya, and Tashkent. [Read More]
